Chandigarh, Nov 7: Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Sunday announced that the Punjab cabinet has decided to reduce petrol prices by Rs10 per litre and diesel by Rs 5 per litre from tonight.
To reduce the rate, the Punjab government has reduced VAT on diesel by 9.92% and on petrol by 13.77%. Charanjit Channi gave this information by holding a press conference after the cabinet meeting on Sunday.
“Petrol in Punjab has become cheapest in the region. As compared to Delhi, petrol in Punjab is now ?9 less,” the state chief minister said.
The Punjab Congress also took to Twitter to make this announcement, saying that the BJP government has tested the patience of people by increasing the fuel prices.
This comes after the central government announced a reduction in excise duty on fuel, a day before Diwali. The BJP earlier this week attacked state governments ruled by the opposition parties like the Congress and the Trinamool Congress for not reducing the VAT on petrol and diesel soon after the announcement was made by the Centre.
Notably, at present, the petrol and diesel rates in Punjab are Rs106.20 and Rs89.83 per litre respectively. According to the finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal, the effective per litre price of diesel and petrol will be Rs. 85 and Rs. 95 per litre respectively (as effective in Jalandhar), and will be applicable from the mid night.
