New Delhi, Oct 19: In four Ukrainian districts that Moscow last month claimed as its own, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the imposition of martial law on Wednesday.
Putin also ordered the government to establish a special coordinating council under Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin to work with Russia’s regions to strengthen Moscow’s military effort in Ukraine in televised remarks to members of his Security Council.
These actions marked the latest escalation in the war, which has been going on for almost eight months, by Putin in response to a string of significant losses suffered by Ukrainian forces since the beginning of September.
They arrived on the same day as inhabitants in Kherson, one of the four seized regions, were instructed to leave certain locations as soon as possible since an impending Ukrainian attack was expected.
In order to support what Russia refers to as its special military operation, Putin said the actions he was directing would strengthen the stability of the economy, industry, and production.
