New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in India today accompanied by his ultra-secure presidential limousine — the Aurus Senat, considered among the safest and most secretive cars ever built. The vehicle, part of his travelling security convoy, will be used throughout his visit as he meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi and participates in bilateral engagements.
What Is The Aurus Senat? Russia’s Indigenous Presidential Limousine
The Aurus Senat is Russia’s homegrown luxury state car, developed specifically for the presidency under the “Kortezh project” to replace imported armoured limousines. Often described as the “Russian Rolls-Royce,” it features blackout security windows, heavy armour plating and a premium handcrafted interior. Before shifting to the Senat, Putin used a Mercedes-Benz S600 Guard Pullman. The limousine made its debut at Putin’s 2018 inauguration, and production later expanded through Aurus Motors in partnership with Russia’s NAMI institute, Sollers JSC, and the UAE’s Tawazun Holding. A small civilian version exists, but production is limited to about 120 units a year.
Why The Aurus Senat Is Considered Nearly Impenetrable
The Senat is engineered for survival in the most extreme threat scenarios. Its armoured body can withstand high-calibre gunfire and armour-piercing rounds, while its protective design resists bomb blasts, missile strikes, and drone attacks. The vehicle can stay afloat and functional if pushed into water, and run-flat technology enables high-speed escape even after total tyre failure. An independent oxygen supply system protects occupants against chemical or gas attacks. Powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 hybrid engine, it can reach 0–100 kmph in roughly 6–9 seconds and hit a top speed of about 160 kmph. Inside, the Senat combines leather and wood-trim luxury with encrypted communication systems designed for state leadership.
Cost And India Connection
The base Senat costs around 18 million rubles (approximately ₹2.5 crore), but Putin’s fully classified armoured version is likely priced at roughly double that amount and remains unavailable to the public. The limousine has been seen in several diplomatic moments, including being gifted to North Korea’s Kim Jong Un in 2024. In September, following the SCO Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi travelled with Putin in the Senat, where the two leaders reportedly spoke at length during their drive.
