Rahul Gandhi Accuses Modi Government of Destroying Great Nicobar Island to Benefit Adani on World Environment Day

New Delhi: On World Environment Day on June 5, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a sharp attack on the Modi government, accusing it of destroying the pristine ecology of Great Nicobar Island — including ancient coral reefs, irreplaceable rainforests, and over 1.5 crore trees — to benefit a businessman he identified as Adani.

India’s Heritage Being Bulldozed, Says Rahul

Posting on X, Gandhi said the government is running a bulldozer over India’s natural heritage and that only the public can stop it. He described the Great Nicobar Project as not for sale, calling it India’s treasure, and vowed that Congress would protect its forests, its people, and its future at any cost, regardless of how hard PM Modi tries to hand it over to Adani.

Questions for Every Young Indian

Gandhi addressed a direct question to every young Indian on the occasion, asking what kind of inheritance they want for their country. He asked whether they want a India where rainforests have been destroyed for casinos, coral reefs erased from maps, tribal communities displaced from their lands, and the air turned to poison — or one where India’s natural heritage is protected, tribal communities are secure, and progress works with nature rather than against it.

Tribal Communities and Ecology at Risk

Gandhi alleged that the project poses a direct threat to the indigenous tribal communities living on the island, who face displacement from their ancestral lands. He framed the destruction of the island’s ecology as a broader pattern of the Modi government prioritising corporate interests over the environment and the rights of marginalised communities.
