Imphal, June 29: Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, visited people displaced by the ethnic conflict in Churachandpur, Manipur, on Thursday. He arrived there by helicopter hours later than expected since the state police had stopped his convoy of vehicles midway due to concerns about potential violence.
Gandhi visited a relief camp and spoke with the inmates.
The Congress leader’s convoy was stopped by police near Bishnupur, around 20 kilometres from Imphal, out of concern for its safety.
“Rahul Gandhi took a state government-provided chopper to visit Churachandpur. Top police and administration officials accompanied him in the helicopter,” said a source at the airport.
Local police in Bishnupur deployed tear gas on protesters, some of whom wanted him to go to Churanchandpur and others who were against his visit.
Gandhi’s supporters, which included many women, took to the streets of Bishnupur to demand that he be let to travel to Churachandpur.
One of the women said, “If (Union Home Minister) Amit Shah could go to Churachandpur, why not Rahul Gandhi?”
