New Delhi, Sept 23: Rahul Gandhi, the party’s leader, has made it clear that no member of the Gandhi family should be next party president, according to Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.
Rahul’s comment comes as battle for the Congress presidential nomination heats up.
“I have requested him (Rahul Gandhi) multiple times to accept everyone’s proposal to become the Congress President. He made it clear that no one from the Gandhi family should become the next chief,” while addressing the media in Kerala on Friday, Gehlot said.

Gehlot continued by saying that he would shortly submit his electoral nomination. He asserted that, considering the current position of the country, opposition needs to be strong.
“Congress General Secretary Ajay Maken and party President Sonia Gandhi will decide the further proceedings if I become the party president,” he added.
The two candidates viewed as possible contenders for the election are Ashok Gehlot and party MP Shashi Tharoor. A resolution stating that “we authorise the incoming Congress president to appoint PCC and AICC members” is being passed at meetings of Congress committees taking place all around the nation.
