Pune, May 22: Raj Thackeray, the Maharashtra Navnirmal Sena head, urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday to introduce the Uniform Civil Code and a population control bill as soon as possible.
The MNS president has already expressed support for the Uniform Civil Code, but his appeal to PM Modi comes at a time when he is embroiled in the Hanuman Chalisa scandal after threatening to play Hanuman Chalisa at mosques unless illegal loudspeakers are removed. He also suggested that Aurangabad be renamed Sambhajinagar in honour of Maratha emperor Sambhaji.
Raj Thackeray claimed that those who did not appreciate his loudspeaker protest set up a trap for him at a gathering in Pune after the MNS president had cancelled his Ayodhya visit.
“But I did not fall for this trap as I did not want my MNS activists to go to jail,” he said.
Raj Thackeray stated that if the Maharashtra government failed to remove illegal loudspeakers from mosques, he had urged his party members to play Hanuman Chalisa.
“But the Rana couple wanted to go to Matoshree and recite Hanuman Chalisa. Why? Is Matoshree a mosque? And then after all this, the couple were seen eating together with Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut,” he added.
Raj Thackeray also told his supporters that he will have surgery on June 1 and will be out for a month and a half.
Pune Police advised the party ahead of Raj Thackeray’s rally on Sunday that no speaker should make any offensive remarks.
