New Delhi: A farewell ceremony was held in the Rajya Sabha for members whose tenure is ending between April and June, including Deputy Chairman Harivansh, former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, and senior leader Sharad Pawar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that 37 members are completing their term now and noted that politics never truly ends, as public life continues beyond parliamentary tenure.
PM Modi Highlights Spirit Of Parliamentary Democracy
Addressing the House during the farewell event, PM Modi said that every two years a large group of MPs completes its tenure, allowing a new group to enter Parliament and learn from experienced members. He emphasized that mutual respect beyond party lines and the sharing of experience among MPs strengthen democratic traditions.
The Prime Minister praised the contributions of the outgoing members and said that their role in debates and legislative work helped shape parliamentary discussions and policies.
Praise For Deputy Chairman Harivansh
PM Modi also appreciated Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh for fulfilling his responsibilities effectively. He said the Deputy Chairman often shoulders critical responsibilities during challenging times in the House and acknowledged Harivansh’s balanced approach in conducting proceedings.
Harivansh Recalls Journey In Public Life
Speaking at the ceremony, Harivansh reflected on his journey in public life. He said he came from a modest background and was inspired by leaders like Jayaprakash Narayan and Chandrashekhar from his region.
He recalled entering the Rajya Sabha in 2014 when he was in the opposition and mentioned that his earlier career as a journalist also gave him opportunities to travel abroad and observe global developments.
Acknowledges Support From Leaders And Parties
Harivansh thanked Prime Minister Modi and the Rajya Sabha Chairman for their appreciation and expressed gratitude to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for bringing him into public life. He also thanked all parties in the NDA and members across political lines for supporting him during his tenure as Deputy Chairman.
Mallikarjun Kharge Says Leaders Never Retire From Politics
Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said farewell moments in Parliament are emotional. He remarked that people involved in politics never truly retire and continue learning throughout their public life.
Kharge added that even after more than five decades in parliamentary politics, he still feels the need to learn and improve. He expressed hope that many of the members completing their tenure would return to the House again in the future.
