Ramgarh, March 23: District and Additional Sessions Judge First Sheshnath Singh’s court on Thursday sentenced Sanjay Kumar Giri, accused in a dowry death case, to eight years imprisonment.  Apart from this, a fine of Rs 80,000 has been imposed.  In case of non-payment of the fine, a provision of imprisonment of one year has been made.

The incident occurred on October 6, 2020. Shankar Singh, brother of the deceased Barkha Devi, had accused her in-laws of dowry death. A total of seven witnesses, including Sani Manohar Prajapati and Dr Taban Rizvi, recorded their statements before the court. In-charge public prosecutor RB Rai submitted that Sanjay Kumar Giri was married to Barkha for three months.

In this regard, in the application given in Bhurkunda OP on October 6, 2020, the brother of the deceased, a resident of Patratu police station area of the district, had said that on October 6, at 7.20 am, information was received on the telephone that his sister is going to hang herself,  so he must see her soon.   Based on this information, his mother Rukmani Devi went and saw that his sister Barkha Devi was dead.  His mother informed him on the phone at eight o’clock in the morning.  After this, he went to his sister’s in-law’s house at 8:30 in the morning with his entire family.

On the basis of the evidence, the PP demanded severe punishment for the accused Sanjay Kumar Giri. On the basis of the evidence presented, the Court convicted Sanjay Kumar Giri under section 304B of IPC and on Thursday the hearing on the point of punishment was held.
