Ramgarh, Jan 23: An inter-school English debate competition was organised at Shri Agrasen School, Bhurkunda on Monday. The students from classes V to VIII participated in the debate competition.

The topic for the discussion was ‘Banning plastic bags and packaging’. Both Team A and Team B had heated discussions on the topic.

Keeping their stand on the plastic ban, Team A said stated that plastics are one of the main causes of pollution and should be banned. It is also lethal to plants, animals and aquatic life. Water sources are also polluted. Waste plastic is never destroyed, it barrens the land. Burning plastic releases highly polluted gases that are harmful to our health. Therefore, the use of paper and cloth bags should be promoted. If plastics are not banned, the planet will face a serious crisis. It also makes it impossible to live on earth.

Meanwhile, Team B said that instead of banning the use of plastic, we should focus on reducing its use and looking for alternative solutions. Plastic bags can be recycled. We need to improve our recycling infrastructure.

A complete ban on plastic bags would increase our dependence on other resources like paper bags. But the reality is that paper bags cannot meet the demands of today’s world. Instead of banning plastic, we should increase the tax on it to reduce consumption. As far as environmental pollution is concerned, the share of plastics in environmental pollution is very less. The use of plastic bags is also a matter of right of choice. If its production stops, a large number of employees will be affected.
