Ranchi: The Court of additional judicial commissioner (AJC) Dinesh Kumar today acquitted Suraj Kumar Soni, an innocent man lodged in Birsa Munda Central Jail for 19 months in a murder case registered at the Nagri police station after one Vimal Kumar Mahto was killed.

Thanks to a callous police action, Suraj had to stay in jail for almost 19 months for a crime which he had not committed.

The order came after a prosecution witness, who was Mahto’s brother, punched a hole in the police investigation on May 6 last year when he was produced before the court for examination and later on other witnesses supported the fact during their examination.

The police officers who arrested Suraj, in their testimony, said that he was the person who is accused of killing Amit.

He made it clear that the reason behind the mistake was similarity in name of the accused and the innocent languishing in jail. He said that it was a fact that the name of the accused of his brother Vimal Kumar Mahto’s murder case was Suraj Kumar Soni but he is not the same whom the police have arrested and jailed. According to him, the police arrested the real one but later got confused and allowed him to go and sent the innocent to jail.

According to the witness, the real accused Suraj, who is a resident of Gumla and whose father’s name is Karthik Soni, is still at large and the police have sent innocent Suraj to jail. The FIR was registered in this connection on September 9, 2021. Arresting took place on October 12, 2021.

Advocates Rahul Pandey and Rakesh Tiwari argued on behalf of Suraj.
