Ranchi, June 25: A trial court awarded life imprisonment to Sandeep Thapa and his two aides, Chandramauli Singh and Sujit Sinha, for killing a BJP leader Surendra Rai in 2006. Apart from life imprisonment, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on each of them.
The conviction and sentence could be possible after the prosecution collected a large amount of scientific evidence and produced 21 witnesses during 16 years of investigation and trial.
Rai, famous as Mukhiya Ji, was a resident of Sidraul village in the Namkum police station area. On October 19, 2006, he was shot dead.
The investigation suggested his involvement in settling a land dispute was the reason behind the murder. The area of the disputed land was 3.05 acres. It belonged to Sushila Devi while Anil Ram was claiming his right over it.
Sushila requested Rai to settle the dispute.
Rai asked Ram to keep himself restrained. A month later, Ram reached his house and threatened to kill him and finally did what he said. The court already awarded him a life sentence on June 14, 2016.
