Ranchi, Aug 24: The Ranchi civil court awarded life imprisonment to a woman named Laxmi Devi who charred her pregnant sister-in-law, Pooja Devi, to death.

It was the court of additional judicial commissioner Dinesh Rai who passed the order. Apart from the life imprisonment the court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict.

The court had convicted the lady on August 18. The woman has been in jail since 22nd January 2020.

Lakshmi set Puja on fire by pouring Kerosene on her. The lady delivered a dead baby before she died while undergoing treatment of her burn injuries.

The court acquitted husband Upendra Sahu and mother-in-law Sharda in the case due to lack of evidence.

The matter came before the court after an FIR was lodged at Khelgaon police station on November 14, 2019, on the statement of Pooja.
