Ranchi, May 3: In times when most people cannot be trusted, a MEDICA doctor saved a patient’s life in Ranchi by donating his blood.
22-years-old Sonat Maraiya, a resident of Sahibganj, got a fresh lease of life after receiving blood from Dr Gunjesh Kumar Singh, who was treating him for acute leukaemia (blood cancer).
Dr Gunjesh said that Sonat came with severe anaemia and haemoglobin was 5 g/dL and was unable to walk. He was having continuous high-grade fever for 15 days. In view of his poor socioeconomic status, he had no place to stay and eat. He needed an urgent life-saving blood transfusion and there was no social support.
“I decided to help him at any cost from my end. I donated blood for him so that his life can be saved and we can proceed further,” Dr Gunjesh added.
“We have started his treatment at a very subsidized rate and free of cost daycare services at Medica hospital Ranchi. He has completed almost 20 days of his treatment and he is absolutely fine now. He has applied for a CM fund for financial support. One local politician of Ranchi Mr Lobin Hembram is also helping him and giving him shelter and food at Ranchi,” Dr Gunjesh further added.
Quoting Mother Teresa Dr Gunjesh said, “We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind of poverty.”
