Ranchi, May 24: Doctors at Orchid Medical Centre successfully cured a 48-year-old lady who had a brain tumour through awake surgery.

Explaining about the tumour Chief Administrative Officer of the hospital Dr PK Gupta said that a brain tumour is a mass or growth of abnormal cells in your brain. Most patients suffering from brain tumours seek treatment in metro cities, leading to a loss of valuable time for the patient.

Dr Vikram Singh – Consultant Neuro Surgeon said that a 48-year-old lady was brought to the emergency at Orchid Medical Centre with complaints of multiple episodes of seizures. She was diagnosed as having a form of brain tumour known as insular glioma.

“These tumours are very close to areas of the brain that control power in the limbs of the opposite side. Surgery in this region carries a high risk of paralysis. To increase patient safety, such surgeries can be done by keeping the patient awake, so that movements of the arm and leg can be monitored while the tumour is being removed. These surgeries are known as awake craniotomy and require technical expertise from both surgery and anaesthesia teams,” he added.

The above-mentioned patient was managed through an awake surgery, performed by Dr Vikram Singh (Neurosurgeon), Dr Amit Gupta (Anaesthetist) and Dr Vaibhav Tulsyan (Anaesthetist).

Dr Vikram further said that during the surgery, the patient was repeatedly asked questions and asked to move her arms and legs. The surgery was successfully conducted which took over 5 hours.
