Ranchi, June 14: The Food Safety Department is looking for aggregators in Ranchi which will collect used cooked oil from small shops, food stalls and restaurants and will send it to the FSSAI agencies to convert it into bio-diesel. The motive behind this is to decrease the quantity of contaminated oil on the market.

The district food safety officer Subir Ranjan spoke to lagatar24.com and said that the decision is taken under the Repurpose Used Cooking Oil (RUCO) initiative by FSSAI.

“The quantity of used and contaminated oil in the city is on a rise. Many people mix the cooked oil with new oil and sell it in the market. The aggregators which we will hire will be responsible for collecting the oil from shops and restaurants and will send it to the FSSAI authorized agencies across the country. It will then be recycled into bio-diesel and bio-detergents,” he said.

He added that the restaurants and shops will be paid a certain amount for the exchange of oil. However, the amount has not yet been confirmed.

“The oil which contains more than 25% Total Polar Compounds (TPC) is not suitable for human consumption. However, the majority of small stalls and restaurants use oils which are not fit for consumption. These steps which we are taking are to stop these practices which have been carried out for years,” he added.

The aggregators who will be hired by the Food safety department will most probably have an App-based tracking system which will help officials as well to track down the progress.

The aggregator will most probably get hired by the department by the end of June this year.
