Dhanbad, Dec 2: Ormajhi and Kanke blocks of Ranchi district have been selected for the pilot project for implementing cancer care of patients through an integrated mechanism.

In this regard, the Ranchi district Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) cell organized a workshop for all stakeholders involved in the cancer care campaign wherein it was decided to make an integrated mechanism for facilitating patient screening at treatment facilities.

For the implementation of the same, Ranchi NCD cell has selected Ormajhi and Kanke blocks for the pilot project. A senior official of the state health department said if it is successful in these two blocks, the mechanism would be implemented in other districts of the state in due course.

According to the official, actions are already being taken under the NCD programme to control cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Numerous private organisations in the state are also working to manage the disease in various ways, including patient care, screening of suspects, and awareness-raising. If all of these stakeholders work together, the programme would be more effective and patients would receive medical care right away after being identified.

At present, under the NCD programme, patients are referred to medical college hospitals for treatment after screening in villages as there are no cancer treatment facilities in Sadar hospital hospitals. But due to heavy patient load, the referred patients do not get proper attention at these hospitals. However, the now integrated mechanism of all stakeholders would ensure proper treatment of patients right from screening at the village level to treatment at the hospital.

Besides Ranchi civil surgeon Dr Vinod Kumar, ACMO Dr Khalko, district NCD nodal officer Dr Mustkin, State NCD nodal officer Dr LR Pathak, Indian Medical Association (IMA) Ranchi chapter president Dr Shambhu Prasad Singh, RIMS PSM HOD Dr Mithilesh, surgery head Dr Nishid, representatives of JohnHopkins Cancer Centre, Transform Rural India Foundation, Tata Trust, Manipal Tata Medical College, PSM Healthcare Foundation and medical officer in-charge of Ormajhi and Kanke community health centre (CHC) gave their suggestions in the workshop to make the campaign effective.
