Ranchi, June 7: Sanjay Seth, member of Parliament from Ranchi, has written to Chief Minister Hemant Soren, pleading with him to allow the fair to be held at Jagannathpur, Ranchi. With regard to the fair’s approval, Seth has told the Chief Minister that it is not only the centre of religious but also economic activity in the society, and thus it should be allowed. In a letter to the Chief Minister, he also expressed gratitude for the Chief Minister’s permission to hold the Deoghar Shravani Mela.

In his letter, Seth stated that before Shravani Mela, there is another world-class celebration called Jagannath Mela. This is a large folk event commemorating Lord Jagannath’s Rath Yatra.  Puri hosts the most important Jagannath Yatra festival in the world. The ceremony is then hosted in Ranchi at the Jagannathpur temple (Dhurva). Due to  corona infection, this journey was closed for two years. Even though the fair was not conducted this year, huge preparations for the Rath Yatra in Puri have begun. And tens of thousands of people will participate in this voyage. The government has declared the fair illegal in Ranchi, citing Corona.

Seth had pressed for authorisation to hold a major Rath Yatra and fair in accordance with government directives on Corona. This yatra and fair, he claims, is more than just a religious occasion. This is an example of an event that is tied to the employment of thousands of families. If this event is not permitted this year, such families will be severely harmed financially.
