Ranchi, Aug.29: Police could not ascertain who pelted stones at the temple and opened fire near Daily Market on June 10, 2022 when violence erupted on Main Road of the Jharkhand capital during a march was taken out after Friday namaz at Equra Mosque against BJP suspended leader Nupur Sharma’s derogatory remarks on Prophet Mohammed.

This came to the fore after the police submitted a final form before the court in one of the FIRs, (FIR No. 22/2022), registered after the violence at the Daily Market police station. Filing the final report, the investigating officer of the case submitted before the court that the case will be reopened in case any clue regarding those involved in stone pelting and firing is found.

Officer-in-charge of Daily Market police station Madhusudan Modak confirmed the development saying ‘many FIRs were registered at his police station after the June 10 violence. The final report has been submitted in one of those FIRs. Investigation in two important FIRs 16/2022 and 17/2022 is still going on. 16/22 is being investigated by police while 17/22 is being investigated by the CID.’

Asked how come the police could not find any clue when the incident was true, he expressed his inability to comment saying only the investigating officer can tell anything in the matter. “I was not at the Daily Market police station when the incident took place. Only the IO can share what happened,” he said. The IO could not be available for his comment.

It may be noted that there was violence in the Jharkhand capital on June 10 last year during a protest march. The police had to resort to firing and lathi charge to control the violent protests. Two protestors had died while several sustained injuries in the police action. The district administration had to suspend the internet service in the capital. The then superintendent of police Surendra Kumar Jha was also transferred.  A PIL filed demanding a NIA probe into the matter after the incident is still pending before the Jharkhand High Court.
