Rapes increasing due to women’s clothes: BJP MLA on Priyanka’s ‘bikini’ remark

Bengaluru, Feb 9:  Renukacharya, a BJP MLA from Karnataka, has sparked a new controversy in the current hijab debate in the state. He claims that rapes are increasing because of women’s clothing.

He made the remark in response to Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi’s ‘bikini’ tweet, in which she said: “Whether it is a bikini, a ghoonghat, a pair of jeans, or a hijab, it is a woman’s right to decide what she wants to wear.

Renukacharya responded as follows,”To use a word like ‘bikini,’ it’s a low-level statement. Children should be completely clothed while attending college. As men are triggered by women’s clothing, rapes are increasing because of women’s clothes. This isn’t right. In our country, women are respected.”

Notably, Priyanka Gandhi tweeted today, “whether it is a bikini, a ghoonghat, a pair of jeans or a hijab, it is a woman’s right to decide what she wants to wear. This right is GUARANTEED by the Indian constitution. Stop harassing women.”

Earlier in the day, Karnataka Energy minister Sunil Kumar also gave a statement that if Congress comes to power, it will make a law asking Hindus to wear hijab.
