Ranchi, Feb 28: 69-year-old Mahadev Pandit got a fresh lease of life after Dr Rakesh Kumar Choudhary of RIMS took up the challenge to save the patient’s life who had a tumour in the left lung by performing high-risk lung surgery.

Though the conditions were unfavourable for the surgery, the proactive approach of the doctor saved dying Pandit.

According to Dr Rakesh, when the patient arrived, the oxygen saturation level was only 70-80% and the patient had a mass tumour in his left lung. He had a persistent cough and difficulty in breathing due to the tumour.

“On investigation, we found that the patient had a tumour in the lower lobe of the left lung which was occupying half of the lung and encroaching onto the heart. On further investigation, we also found that the patient is having a rare type of cancer and after proper medication also his health was deteriorating day by day,” Dr Choudhary said.

“So finally, with a lot of difficulties and counselling with all the doctors, we decided to perform a lung surgery to preserve the lung function and remove the disease. After the surgery, the patient was doing fine but on Saturday his hemodynamic became unstable after which he was provided with life-supporting medications which made him stable,” Dr Choudhary added.

“But again on Sunday, his hemodynamic became unstable and I was losing the hope to save him but after a lot of difficulties and with the help of supporting medications he was made stable and now the patient is doing fine and hopefully he will go home healthy from here,” Dr Choudhary further said.

On talking to the patient who was quite stable and was doing well, he said that the continuous efforts of Dr Rakesh have given him a new life.

“I want to thank him as several hospitals had given up on me but he told me that he will save me and finally I am having no difficulty and within 72 hours of surgery I have already started feeling healthy.”

Another patient of Chhattisgarh who was lying beside him and was there for an open heart surgery said that Dr Rakesh’s behaviour with the patient is incomparable with any other doctor as he treats every patient in a friendly manner. “He was there with Mahadev Pandit the whole night till the time he was not stable.”
