PRINCE KUMAR
Ranchi, March 7: 28-year-old Lakshmi Kumari, who was suffering from Situs Inversus totalis with Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) & high pulmonary artery pressures, got a fresh lease of life after a very rare and difficult surgery performed by the Cardio-Thoracic Vascular Surgery department of the RIMS.
According to the HOD of the CTVS department Dr Vineet Mahajan, the girl was suffering from ASD in which there is a hole in the heart by birth because of which she had a problem in breathing and the impure blood was getting mixed with the pure blood affecting the proper functioning of the body.
Dr Anshul Kumar said, “Her body organs were not at the proper place which in medical terms is called Situs Inversus Totalis where her liver was on the left instead of right. Similarly, her heart was on the right side which is usually on the left side. Because of this condition, the surgery was difficult and also challenging. This type of condition is very rare and found only in 1 out of 3 lakh people.”
“Her surgery was done by doing open-heart surgery with a procedure known as Dacron patch closure, after which the patient is now stable. In the coming day the patient will be discharged from the hospital,” Dr Kumar added.
Lakshmi’s brother Parmeshwar Bedia said that they came to know about her sisters’ rare disease by a CCL doctor after which she was referred to RIMS.
“Her surgery was conducted smoothly and now my sister is out of danger and doing well. Doctors have said that she will recover soon and will be discharged after a short period,” Bedia said.
The surgery was performed by Dr Anshul Kumar (Surgeon) under the guidance of Dr Vineet Mahajan (Surgeon) with the support of Dr Nitesh Sinha (Anaesthesiologist), Dr Mukesh (Anaesthesiologist)& Dr. Khushboo.
