RIMS Ranchi: Smart dustbins fail to serve purpose as commuters throw garbage on roads

Ranchi, March 11: Smart dustbins were installed in between the New Trauma Centre and the paying ward of Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) to curb the pollution near the RIMS premises. But they have not been able to serve the purpose.

The shopkeepers and the commuters passing by throw the garbage around the dustbin which spreads across the street and also pollutes the RIMS premises.

The placement of dustbins at such a place has become an utter nuisance as patients reaching the RIMS for treatment have to go through the tough stinking smell of garbage. The doctors and staff of the RIMS are also using the same road to reach RIMS which has caused dissatisfaction among the doctors also.

“A super-speciality hospital and its premises should deserve a neat and tidy environment but with the installation of garbage just outside the gate it looks like one is entering into a garbage dump yard,” a doctor of RIMS said.

However, Deputy Medical Superintendent of RIMS Dr Shailesh Tripathi said that the smart dustbin was installed so that the garbage gets collected at a single place and the RMC trucks pick it up daily.

“Earlier there was a huge pile of garbage at that place because of which a smart dustbin was installed to restrict the garbage from entering the RIMS premises,” Dr Tripathi said.

A shopkeeper Vijay, who sells tea near the RIMS, said that the people are responsible for the shredded pieces of garbage on the road. People should throw the garbage carefully so that it remains inside the garbage tin itself.

“I see every day RMC vehicles come to collect the garbage from the dustbin but it becomes difficult for them also to collect the garbage that is thrown outside the dustbin,” Vijay said.
