Ranchi, Feb 23: The state-owned Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) will send a compliance letter to the pollution control board which has imposed a Rs 4.41 crore penalty on the medical college.

According to Preventive & Social Medicine HOD Dr. Vidya Sagar, the issues mentioned by the pollution control during the inspection have already been rectified on which the penalty has been imposed.

“As it is a state-run medical college, the work done in the hospital is carried out by the different departments of the state government. The departments have been informed to start the work. The common biomedical treatment facility has also been made operational to curb the improper disposal of the wastes,” Dr. Sagar said.

“A compliance letter will be sent to the board by the Director on which the points will be mentioned where RIMS have already worked on and have rectified the faults found by the pollution control board,” Dr. Sagar added.

On the question of whether the RIMS will be paying the penalty or not, he said that a time of 30 days has been provided by the board for paying the penalty. The decision will be taken by the Director after the response of the board on the compliance letter.

The State Pollution Control Board had imposed a fine of Rs 4.41 crore because of the below-mentioned issues:

  • According to the BioMedical Act-2016, all hospitals should have sewerage treatment plants, but RIMS lacks them.
  • The medical college also does not have an Effluent Treatment Plant. It was instructed to get it built during the inspection, but it was not made even after years.
  • Hospitals should have a central waste collection room, but RIMS does not have it.
  • There should be a common biomedical treatment facility for the proper disposal of biomedical waste, which is not in RIMS.
  • In the past, the inspection of RIMS was done by the Pollution Control Board. Some defects were found during the inspection. For the same flaws, the board has imposed a fine on RIMS.
