Ranchi/Kolkata, Dec 29: West Bengal police on Thursday arrested Jharkhand-based actor Riya Kumari’s husband Prakash Kumar a day after the actress was shot dead on the Ranchi-Kolkata highway.

The action was taken after Riya’s family member registered an FIR in this connection and police interrogated Kumar throughout the night and observed discrepancies in his statement.

“The actor was travelling to Kolkata from Ranchi with her husband and their two-year-old daughter on Wednesday. Initially, her husband had told the police that she was shot during an attempted highway robbery but there were discrepancies in his statement,” a police official said.

According to the police, the primary findings of the post-mortem report revealed that Riya suffered a bullet injury near her right ear and she was shot dead at point-blank range.

While Kumar is a film producer, Kumari acted in albums in Khortha, a local language in Jharkhand.

Kumar had told the police that they were attacked when he stopped their car near Mahishrekha bridge on National Highway 16 in the Rajapur area of Bagnan at around 6 am to relieve himself.

Police doubted the claim of Riya’s husband saying three armed men attacked him and tried to rob his belongings but his wife came in between. They shot her and fled from the spot. According to police, such incidents are rare in their state.

Another reason that made police suspicious was time.

According to Riya’s husband, it was getting to 6 am and for police, it was amazing how no one noticed anything unusual at that time. Apart from that, another this that made police suspicious was when Riya’s husband did not say anything suggesting that they were being followed or they were carrying huge cash or valuables.
