Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court has completed hearing the bail petition of Shivkumar Dewra, an accused in the Rs 730-crore GST scam in Jamshedpur, with Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad’s bench reserving its order. Senior advocate Amit Kumar Das and Saurav Kumar appeared for the ED.

Shell Companies Allegedly Used to Claim Wrongful ITC

The case concerns alleged fraud in GST input tax credit (ITC) through shell companies. Fake invoices were allegedly generated through more than 90 shell firms, on the basis of which wrongful GST benefits of over Rs 730 crore were claimed, causing heavy revenue loss to the government.

Rs 14,325 Crore in Fake Invoices Alleged

According to the investigation, Shivkumar Dewra, Sumit Gupta, Amit Gupta and others are accused of preparing fake invoices worth about Rs 14,325 crore, on the basis of which the wrongful ITC claims were made.

ED Has Arrested Several Businessmen

GST Intelligence acted first, registering the case on the statement of the then GST officer Dinesh Singh, after which Dewra, Sumit Gupta and Amit Gupta were arrested and sent to jail. Sumit and Amit Gupta are residents of Jamshedpur. The Enforcement Directorate later registered an ECIR and began its own probe. So far, it has arrested Shivkumar Dewra, Mohit Dewra, Jugsalai-based businessman Vicky Bhalotia and Kolkata businessman Amit Gupta.
