Moscow, Feb 21: According to the source, Russia’s Federal Security Service claimed that a shell launched from Ukraine destroyed a Russian border station (FSB). The Ukrainian military, on the other hand, has disputed that the border facility was shelled, calling Moscow’s assertion “false news.”
A shell fired from Ukrainian territory entirely destroyed a Russian border guard post in Russia’s Rostov region, according to the Russian FSB. There were no injuries recorded as a result of the incident.
Interfax news agency, quoting the FSB, said the incident occurred about 150 metres from the border between Russia and Ukraine.
“On February 21, at 9:50 am (0650 GMT), an unidentified projectile fired from Ukraine completely destroyed a border facility used by the FSB border guard service in the Rostov region, around 150 meters from the Russian-Ukrainian border,” the security service said in a statement.
Since Thursday, shelling across the line separating Ukrainian government forces and pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine has increased.
On Sunday, Russia reaffirmed its intention to pull tens of thousands of troops back from Ukraine’s northern border.
The United States, on the other hand, has maintained that Russia is still considering an invasion of Ukraine.
Earlier, US President Joe Biden agreed to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin “in principle” on Monday, assuming Moscow did not proceed with mobilization near Ukraine’s borders.
