Kyiv, March 4: The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest in Ukraine’s southeast, has been taken by Russian armed forces on Friday, according to the regional state administration.
“Operational personnel are monitoring the condition of power units,” it said on social media.
It claimed that measures were made to ensure that the operations complied with safety regulations.
According to Ukraine, Russian military struck the plant early Friday, setting fire to a nearby five-story training facility.
“The reactors at Zaporizhzhia power station are protected by robust containment structures and reactors are being safely shut down”, U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said on Thursday.
Granholm announced on Twitter that she had discussed the issue at the plant with Ukraine’s energy minister. She claimed that there were no higher radiation measurements in the vicinity of the plant.
As of early Friday, one of Ukraine’s six nuclear power plants was operational, according to emergency services.
