New Delhi, March 30: Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, will pay a two-day official visit to India, according to the Union Minister of External Affairs. The visit, which will take place on Thursday and Friday, marks the highest degree of cooperation between the Indian and Russian governments since Moscow’s military action against Ukraine began on February 24.
“Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov, will pay an official visit to New Delhi on 31 March-1 April 2022,” the MEA said.
No further information about who Lavrov will meet on his trip has been provided as of yet. The tour happens to fall on the same day as visits by British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and US Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economic Affairs Daleep Singh.
After a two-day visit to China, Lavrov is on his way to India. The Russian foreign minister’s travel to India comes as the West has ratcheted up pressure on Russia over the Ukraine incursion by imposing punishing economic sanctions.
Since Russia’s savage offensive in Ukraine, which has resulted in the deaths of hundreds (perhaps thousands) of people, including children, India has taken a neutral stance and avoided publicly criticising Moscow.
