CONRAD DIAS
Ranchi, April 20: Under the Safe and Responsible Migration Initiative (SRMI), the District Labour Superintendent has inaugurated the Safe and Responsible Migration Centre in Gumla for safe and responsible migration of migrant workers.
The centre will work under the aegis of the District Labour and Employment Office as a district level support cell and under the supervision of the District Labour and Employment Officer. It will work towards identifying inter-state migrants and their families within Gumla, so that social security of such workers and workers can be ensured.
This work will be done in coordination with the Deputy Commissioner and other officers. The facility of registration of workers will also be provided at the centre. It will also organise camps from time to time.
The initiative was launched by Chief Minister Hemant Soren in December 2021. There is a large-scale migration of labourers from Jharkhand for employment, but till date no concrete policy has been made for the safe and accountable migration of migrant workers. Keeping this in mind, SRMI has been started.
At present, under the SRMI pilot project, the policy has been made keeping in mind the migration of workers of Dumka, West Singhbhum and Gumla.
A database of migrant workers who have gone for employment from these three districts to Delhi, Kerala and Leh-Ladakh is being prepared. In coordination with all these states, social, economic and legal help will be given to the migrant workers.
Social security and welfare schemes for migrant workers and their families will be linked through institutional policy and operational framework. On the basis of registration of migrant workers, monitoring and analysis of their database, a systematic plan will be prepared at the district level to enable them to be linked with the state level employment scheme.
Workers will be sensitized through public awareness campaigns/programmes around safe and responsible migration practices. It will act as a Grievance Redressal Help Centre for the workers.
