New York, Aug 13: Salman Rushdie’s book agent, Andrew Wylie said that the author will probably lose one eye after he was stabbed numerous times at an event in New York on Friday.

Wylie claims that after many hours of operation, Rushdie was placed on a ventilator because the nerves in his arms had been cut. Rushdie’s liver had been stabbed causing damage.

Hadi Matar, a 24-year-old New Jersey resident, stabbed Rushdie. Soon after attacking the author, he was taken into custody by the New York Police.

Salman Rushdie was attacked on Friday as he prepared to give a speech at the Chautauqua Institute in western New York. The 75-year-old author was stabbed while being introduced on stage.

The author underwent surgery to repair his injuries after being flown to a hospital.

Salman Rushdie gained notoriety with his Booker Prize–winning 1981 book “Midnight’s Children,” but it wasn’t until “The Satanic Verses” that he became a household figure. Since 1988, the book has been prohibited in Iran because it is thought to be blasphemous by many Muslims. Iran’s late leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, issued a fatwa calling for Rushdie’s death.

Rushdie, who was born in India, has spent the last 20 years living in the US. After the uproar surrounding his fourth novel, The Satanic Verses, he largely lived in the UK and disappeared from public view. He continued to write novels throughout the 1990s despite the threats.

The attack on Salman Rushdie was denounced by authors all across the world.
