New Delhi: Teenage Australian opener Sam Konstas dazzled on his Test debut against India, earning high praise from former cricketer Justin Langer, who likened the 19-year-old’s fearless batting to Virender Sehwag’s iconic knock in 2003. Langer, during his commentary on Star Sports, lauded Konstas’ confidence and aggressive strokeplay, traits reminiscent of Sehwag’s game-changing approach in Test cricket.
Konstas Shines on Debut
Konstas (60 off 65 balls) made an instant impact, forming an 89-run opening partnership with veteran Usman Khawaja (38*). His innings featured six boundaries and two sixes, as he dominated India’s experienced pace attack, smashing Mohammed Siraj and unsettling the bowlers early on.
“Sam Konstas was confident even before the game and backed it up with his performance. Watching him bat reminded me of Virender Sehwag’s 195 against us in 2003—aggressive, fearless, and game-changing,” Langer remarked.
Aiding Khawaja’s Comeback
Langer also highlighted how Konstas’ aggression freed up Khawaja, who has struggled for form this series. “Konstas’ style mirrors that of David Warner, providing the perfect foil for Khawaja, who looked much more comfortable batting alongside an aggressive partner,” Langer noted.
Fiery Spirit and Memorable Debut
Konstas’ confidence extended beyond his batting. A mid-pitch collision with Virat Kohli led to a heated exchange, showcasing his spunk in handling pressure situations. Despite the tension, Konstas held his ground, delivering a performance that promises a bright future.
Ravindra Jadeja eventually ended Konstas’ remarkable debut with a skidding arm ball that trapped him lbw, providing India a much-needed breakthrough.
Indian Bowlers Struggle
India’s pace attack, including Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, struggled to find the right lengths against Konstas. Akash Deep showed glimpses of consistency, but it was Jadeja who managed to break through the promising partnership.
Konstas’ debut innings not only gave Australia a solid start but also underscored the rising talent in their ranks, sparking excitement among fans and drawing comparisons to legends like Sehwag.
