Jamshedpur, May 12: Four persons were killed, three of them on the spot and six others injured as the pick-up van they were travelling in overturned at Chilgu on NH-33 under Chandil thana area early on Thursday morning.
The victims were residents of Urmal near Chandil. They were in a ‘baraat’ party and were returning from Ramgarh at about 4 am when the driver of the van hit the speeding vehicle in the divider near a bridge at Chilgu causing it to overturn.
As soon as the mishap took place, local residents followed by a police party came to the spot and started rescuing the victims. During the rescue operation, three of the passengers were found dead and seven others were injured four of them seriously.
The police rushed seven injured to MGM medical college hospital, where one of the victims succumbed to his injury.
Getting the information about the mishap, the kins of those injured reached the MGM medical college hospital. Ichagarh legislator, Sabita Mahto under whose jurisdiction Chilgu falls also rushed to the medical college hospital later on.
The legislator took stock of the injured and made the authority of the medical college hospital to refer three seriously injured to RIMS Ranchi for better treatment.
OC, Chandil thana, SS Das said the mishap took place as the driver of the pick-up van lost control over the vehicle while it was at a breakneck speed.
“From the preliminary investigation, we gathered that the driver might have lost control over the speeding vehicle due to over exhaustion and sleep. The driver who is suspected to be among the dead had carried out his driving duty for the campaigning of ongoing Panchayat elections during the day and had ventured out taking ‘baraatis’ at the night. We are yet to ascertain whether he was under the influence of liquor also,” said Das.
He said all the victims were male and residents of Urmal.
The OC confirmed that three of the injured have been referred to RIMS, adding that the rest of the injured are being shifted to Tata Main Hospital from the MGM medical college hospital for better treatment.
