Jamshedpur, May 28: A Nor’wester storm that swept across the steel city and the adjoining area on Friday evening claimed the life of a young woman in Adityapur.
The tragedy took place at Rahargora under the RIT thana area in Adityapur, about seven km away from the heart of the steel city.
The victim identified as Neha Mahto was returning home to Rahargora after shopping in Bistupur when the storm began, leading her to take shelter under a tree. But instantly, a thick branch of the tree parted the apartment in the impact of the storm and fell directly on the victim’s head and she died immediately.
Neha’s death could not be discovered until after midnight because of the storm, which caused hundreds of trees to be uprooted or affected by falling branches across the region.
The police today recovered the body of the woman and sent it to the Seraikela Sadar Hospital for postmortem.
The OC of the RIT police station said that the woman’s body remained covered under the fallen tree branch for a long time and was discovered by the victim’s family members only.
“As the woman did not return home from Bistupur despite the inordinate delay, the family members had started searching for her. The anxious kin were even searching her under fallen trees and ultimately found her dead under the canopy of a fallen branch of a tree around midnight, ” said the OC.
According to a relative, Neha (22) was married in Rourkela two years ago. Though she was originally a resident of Salbani in the Rajnagar thana area of adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district, her parents were staying at a rented house in Rahargora in Adityapur. She had come to her parents’ house from Rourkela recently.
