The Gujarat government filed an affidavit informing the SC that these 11 convicts were released after serving a 14-year term on good behaviour and with the agreement of the central government.

On November 30, the petition was brought up in front of a bench presided over by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud by attorney Shobha Gupta, speaking on behalf of Bilkis.

Later, Justice Bela M. Trivedi of the Supreme Court withdrew from hearing the petition which was filed in response to the Gujarat government’s decision to commute the sentences of the prisoners.

The 11 convicts who had been given life sentences in the case were released in August. Following the approval of their appeal for the remission of the sentence, the convicts were released under Gujarat’s remission policy.
