New Delhi, May 18: Indrani Mukerjea, the main suspect in the death of her daughter Sheena Bora, was granted bail by the Supreme Court on Wednesday. A three-judge bench headed by Justice L Nageswara Rao said the trial is not going to be completed anytime soon.
“The allegation made against the petitioner is that she planned the murder in view of the live in relationship of her daughter with Rahul Mukerjea, who was the son of Peter Mukerjea and his earlier wife,” said the bench.
Indrani Mukerjea, who was arrested in August 2015 and is currently detained in the Byculla women’s prison in Mumbai, was represented by senior counsel Mukul Rohatgi. The trial, according to Rohatgi, will not be completed anytime soon because a huge number of witnesses have yet to be interviewed.
A special CBI court, which is hearing the murder case, has previously rejected her bail on several occasions.
Indrani Mukerjea, her then-driver Shyamvar Rai, and ex husband Sanjeev Khanna allegedly strangled Bora (24) in a car in April 2012. The body was set ablaze in a jungle in the Raigad district. Bora was Indrani’s prior relationship’s daughter. Peter Mukerjea, a former media baron, was also detained for allegedly being a part of the plot. In February 2020, the top court granted him bail. During his captivity, his marriage to Indrani Mukerjea dissolved.
