New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to urgently hear a petition concerning the police lathi-charge and use of water cannons against Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protesters during the July 20 Parliament march, dismissing the petitioner’s plea for the court to review video evidence of the incident.

Petitioner Sought Suo Motu Cognizance, CJI Declines

The advocate who filed the petition had urged the court to view videos showing alleged police action against protesters and take suo motu cognizance of the matter. However, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant responded that the court did not have time to watch videos, advising the lawyer not to waste the court’s time or his own.

Lawyer Alleges Police Crackdown on Student Protesters

The matter drew attention after the petitioner’s counsel raised the issue of alleged police violence against protesters before the Supreme Court, claiming that police had acted harshly against student demonstrators and that multiple videos existed documenting the incident. The lawyer requested that the CJI personally view the footage and take suo motu notice of the matter, but Chief Justice Surya Kant cut him short, stating that the court had no interest in watching videos given its limited time.
