New Delhi, Nov 22: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said on Tuesday that special benches will be set up from next week in the Supreme Court for hearing tax matters.
“There will be a special bench from next week onwards on Wednesdays and Fridays to deal with direct and indirect sales tax matters solely,” the CJI said.
Justice Chandrachud had commended V Lakshmikumaran, founding partner of tax law firm Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan, last year in October, when the latter suggested that the constitution of a tax bench will go a long way in easing the pendency of tax cases before the top court.
“That is an excellent suggestion. I will mention it to the Hon’ble CJI today,” Justice Chandrachud who was then the third senior most judge had said.
CJI at the time was Justice NV Ramana.

The 2015 creation of a tax bench comprised of Justices AK Sikri and Rohinton Nariman resulted in the delivery of more than 800 decisions. This bench, which sat during 2015-16, had met with favourable reviews from the Bar for the speed and quality of justice dispensation. Later, it was dissolved.
