New Delhi, Jan 12: The Supreme Court will hear on Wednesday a petition seeking an independent inquiry into the Haridwar ‘Dharma Sansad’ speeches allegedly inciting violence against the minority community.

The case will be heard by a bench led by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana. Justices Hima Koli and Surya Kant are the other two members of the bench.

Earlier on Monday, senior advocate Kapil Sibal appearing for the petitioner mentioned the matter for urgent hearing before the bench. The plea, submitted by journalist Qurban Ali and former Patna high court judge and senior attorney Anjana Prakash, asked for a special investigation team (SIT) to conduct a “independent, credible, and unbiased probe” into incidences of hate speech directed against the Muslim community.

The plea also said that the alleged hate speeches consisted of open calls for genocide of Muslims in order to achieve ethnic cleansing.

To investigate the crime, the Uttarakhand government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Meanwhile, a second FIR has been filed against ten people in relation to the Haridwar gathering, when hate remarks were made.

Another petition was filed by the Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind in the Supreme Court on Monday to ban anti-Muslim speeches and programmes like the ‘Dharma Sansad’ in Haridwar and in the national capital.
