New Delhi: The Supreme Court has deferred to October 15 the hearing on petitions relating to protests in Delhi and the shutdown of metro and train services, which a bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana was to take up on Tuesday.
Pleas Cover Contempt and Detention Issues
The petitions include a contempt plea over the alleged violation of the Supreme Court’s October 9 order, as well as matters related to detentions. In that order, the court had directed that metro and rail services should not be shut down completely and should instead be run in a controlled manner. The petitions concern the closure of metro stations and disruption of train services ahead of the October 10 protest against CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
Hearing Adjourned Over Justice Mohana’s Health
The CJI told lawyers that Justice Mohana was unwell but had still come to court and joined proceedings on Tuesday. Hearing this, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta urged the bench to defer the matter, saying health concerns should not be ignored. Senior advocates, including Gopal Sankaranarayanan, also agreed to the adjournment, following which the hearing was postponed.
