New Delhi, May 18: The Tamil Nadu law authorising the sport of “Jallikattu” (bull taming) in the state was upheld by the Supreme Court on Thursday.
The legitimacy of the Maharashtra statute permitting bullock-cart races was also affirmed by a five-judge Constitution bench led by Justice K M Joseph, which issued a unanimous decision.
Bull-taming sport called “Jallikattu” or “eruthazhuvuthal” is a tradition of Tamil Nadu’s Pongal harvest festival.
A group of petitions contesting the legislation in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra permitting “Jallikattu” and bullock-cart races were heard by the bench, which also included justices Ajay Rastogi, Aniruddha Bose, Hrishikesh Roy, and C T Ravikumar.
