NEW DELHI: The alarming deterioration in air quality across northern India has led to widespread school closures and a shift to online learning. States like Delhi, Haryana, and Maharashtra have taken immediate steps to mitigate health risks, while Punjab and Uttar Pradesh continue to assess the situation.
Severe AQI Levels Across Northern India
Delhi has recorded “severe” AQI levels, with some areas reporting alarming figures: Anand Vihar (487), Dwarka (499), and Chandni Chowk (444). These levels pose significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory ailments.
The Delhi government has enforced GRAP IV (Graded Response Action Plan), introducing stringent curbs on vehicle movement and construction activities.
Haryana’s AQI levels remain critical, with readings around 320, categorized as “very poor” to “severe,” especially in regions like Gurgaon and Faridabad.
Punjab, while not as severely affected, recorded AQI levels in the “unhealthy” category at 207, prompting close monitoring.
Cities in Uttar Pradesh, such as Ghaziabad and Noida, part of the Delhi-NCR region, reported AQI levels ranging from 352-408, pushing them into the “severe” category.
State-wise Measures for Schools
Delhi: Shift to Online Classes
The Delhi government has suspended all physical classes for students up to Class 9. However, Classes 10 and 12 are permitted to continue offline classes due to board exam preparations.
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi announced this measure on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing the importance of protecting students’ health amidst dense fog and low visibility (200 meters).
Haryana: Holidays for Primary Schools
Haryana’s government declared holidays for students up to Class 5 in both private and government schools. The Directorate of School Education has authorized local authorities to extend the holiday or switch to online learning based on air quality conditions.
Punjab: Monitoring Situation
While no official school closures have been announced, the Punjab government is closely monitoring the situation and may announce temporary closures if pollution levels worsen.
Uttar Pradesh: Awaiting Decisions
Cities like Ghaziabad and Noida, heavily impacted by severe AQI levels, are yet to announce school closures. Authorities are in discussions, and updates are expected soon.
Impact on Public Health and Daily Life
The hazardous air quality is triggering serious health issues, including respiratory problems and increased cardiovascular risks. Commuters in Delhi face additional challenges due to dense smog and reduced visibility.
