Jamshedpur, Oct 16: A 14-year-old girl was run over by a heavy dumper near Kandra market under the same police station area in the Seraikela-Kharsawan district about 15 km away from here on Monday afternoon.
The mishap took place while the victim later identified as Sumitra Mardi was pedalling her cycle to tuition class in Gamharia.
Sumitra who was a class IX student and a resident of the adjoining Gitibera locality was rushed to MGM Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH) Jamshedpur where the doctors on emergency duty declared her as brought dead.
Incidentally, the driver of the dumper, a Hyva, stopped the vehicle on the spot until the police did not come there.
OC of Kandra Thana, Pascal Toppo said the girl was riding the cycle slowly towards Gamharia through the crowded marketplace located along the main road.
“As the victim was riding slowly through the crowded stretch, the Hyva came from behind, also at a slow speed. But accidentally the cycle the victim was riding slipped, causing the girl to fall in front of the rear wheels of the dumper. As a result of the mishap, the girl sustained grievous head injuries,” said Toppo while talking to lagatar24.com.
The OC said though hours have passed since the girl was killed, no one from her family had turned up at the police station.
He pointed out the victim’s identity was established from the books and copies she was carrying for her tuition class.
Toppo said they have, however, seized the dumper and arrested the driver, adding that the body is still lying at MGMMCH Jamshedpur.
