Prayagraj, May 26: Prior to the opening of the new Parliament building, the golden “Sengol,” which had been kept in the Allahabad Museum, has been transported to the nation’s capital.
Notably, the new Parliament building will keep the “Sengol” as a legacy which served as a memento of the symbol of the transfer of authority from the British to India.
The whole collection of former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru is stored in the Allahabad Museum, and the famous “Sengol” was moved to the National Museum last year, said Waman Wankhede, Curator of the Allahabad Museum.
Waman Wankhede said, “The foundation stone of this museum was also laid by former PM Nehru. He donated more than 1200 materials to Allahabad Museum, under then-curator SC Kala. Nehru wanted his whole collection to be kept here only. Along with all the things, this golden stick was also kept in the collection”.
“It (Sengol) is a 162 cm long stick with gold polish. It was transferred to the national museum on November 4, 2022,” he added.
The Sengol was chosen by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as Amrit Kaal’s national symbol. The exact identical event will take place in the new Parliament building, with Adheenam (Priests) performing the ritual again and vesting the PM with the Sengol.
The Prime Minister will place the same Sengol from 1947 prominently close to the Speaker’s podium in the Lok Sabha. It will be on view for the entire country and will be brought out for significant occasions.
