New Delhi, Aug 16: Shahbaz Ahmed named as the replacement for Washington Sundar for the three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe, says BCCI on Tuesday.
Notably, Washington Sundar injured his shoulder while playing a County game in England. He has been ruled out of the Zimbabwe tour.
Ahmed, a crucial player of the Bengal team, had a successful IPL season while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), accumulating 219 runs in 16 innings. Ahmed, who played the finishing position alongside Dinesh Karthik in the IPL, received plaudits from a number of previous cricket players, including renowned cricketer Sunil Gavaskar.
Prior to the South Africa tour earlier this year, the young player Washington was ill with Covid-19 and missed the domestic season.
He missed the home white ball series against the West Indies and Sri Lanka in February and March due to a hamstring issue. He suffered a webbing split during the IPL in April and May, missing five games for Sunrisers Hyderabad. He did, however, play in a few games for Lancashire and was selected for the Zimbabwe series.
KL Rahul will serve as the team’s captain for the three-match series against Zimbabwe in place of regular skipper Rohit Sharma.
On August 18, 2022, India and Zimbabwe will face off in the first One-Day International at the Harare Sports Club.
India’s squad for 3 ODIs: KL Rahul (Captain), Shikhar Dhawan (vice-captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Sanju Samson (wicket-keeper), Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Avesh Khan, Prasidh Krishna, Mohd Siraj, Deepak Chahar, Shahbaz Ahmed.
