New Delhi, Oct 5: Following flash floods in the Teesta River valley on Wednesday due to a cloudburst over Lhonak Lake in north Sikkim, at least 14 people have died and 102 others, including 22 army jawans, are still missing. The calamity significantly affected more than 20,000 people in its wake.
Officials informed that a soldier among the 23 army personnel who went missing yesterday was subsequently found and rescued.
Sikkim Chief Secretary VB Pathak stated that approximately 3,000 tourists from different regions of the country were reported to be stranded in various areas of the state.
In the aftermath of the calamity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi communicated with Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang to assess the state’s situation and guaranteed him of providing all possible assistance. Rajnath Singh, the Defence Minister, prayed for the safety of the army troops who were reported missing.
In a notification, the Sikkim government stated that the natural calamity has been officially designated as a disaster.
