CONRAD DIAS

Ranchi, Aug 1:  The block-level hockey competition ‘Nehru Cup’, scheduled from August 1 to 3, started on Monday. However, many schools in various blocks of Simdega claim that the school officials are completely unaware of when and where the tournament will take place.

The vice president of Hockey Jharkhand said that the teachers at RC MS Karangaguri School in Kersai block are completely unaware of the tournament. The School is known for producing famous hockey players like Sangeeta Kumari, Beauty Dungdung, Deepika Soreng, Sushma Kumari, Alka Dungdung and Alpha Kerketta.

“This shows that there is no transparency in the sports department as many schools are not been informed about the tournament. The tournament is played at the block level and the team that wins will qualify for the district level and so on. Players get a chance to play at the National level,” he said.

He added that if the tournament would have been organised by Hockey Jharkhand then no such miscommunication would have happened.

However, the officials from the Sports department have denied such allegations and said that the details about the tournament were given to all the schools that are participating in the tournament and that there was no miscommunication.

Konbegi added that there have been approvals only on paper and in reality, the teams that are participating in the tournament are the few selected teams that are favourites.
