New Delhi, July 16: Ace Indian shuttler PV Sindhu, after defeating unseeded Japanese competitor Saena Kawakami in the competition’s semifinals, quickly advanced to the finals of the Singapore Open.
Prior to the match, Sindhu had a 2-0 record against Kawakami. She did not allow her opponent to get any momentum, easily winning by the scores of 21-15, 21-7.
The 24-year-old Japanese opponent was forced to the right side of the court by Sindhu, who made the best use of her variety by pushing her to pick up her drop shots. The unseeded opponent, who had stunned the rankings by defeating Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong, the sixth seed, 21-17, 21-19, had no response for Sindhu on Saturday morning, July 16.
The only prominent Indian athlete to have progressed this far in the competition is Sindhu. Saina Nehwal and HS Prannoy, among others, were eliminated from the competition in the past after playing stressful matches.
While Kodai Naraoka overcame HS Prannoy in a three-set match, 12-21, 21-14, 21-18, Nehwal fell to the Japanese Aaya Ohori 13-21, 21-15, 20-22.
The Indian shuttlers are very optimistic about their chances in the Commonwealth Games this time around, especially in light of their triumph in the Thomas Cup, where they overcame all odds to defeat the strongest competition in the competition. India’s triumph was compared to Kapil Dev’s team’s triumph in the 1983 Cricket World Cup.
