New Delhi, July 13: Olympic medalist PV Sindhu defeated Lianne Tan of Belgium in the Women’s singles division’s opening round on Wednesday, giving her Singapore Open 2022 campaign a successful start.

PV Sindhu, who was playing on court 1, won the match in two straight games by scores of 21-15 and 21-11. In just two games, she removed her Belgian opponent from the competition due to her overwhelming dominance.

Sindhu had previously competed in two events, where she gave strong performances and placed in the top eight.

In the quarterfinals of the Malaysia Masters 2022, Tai Tzu-Ying of Taiwan defeated Sindhu with scores of 13-21, 21-12, and 12-21. She had previously competed in the Malaysia Open 2022, when she fell to the same opponent in the quarterfinals by scores of 21-13, 15-21, and 13-21.

In contrast, Mithun Manjunath of India defeated fellow countryman Kidambi Srikanth in the opening round of the men’s singles division on court 1.

Manjunath defeated his opponent by scores of 17-21, 21-15, and 18-21. He had a successful start, winning the opening match. However, Srikanth recovered to win the second. Manjunath won the last game to win the match and move on to the next round.

At the Orleans Masters 2022 in France in April, Mithun Manjunath finished second to Toma Junior Popov in the men’s singles final and earned a silver medal. At the Palais des Sports venue, the Indian shuttler, who was rated 79th, was defeated by Popov, the crowd’s favourite, by scores of 21-11 and 21-19 in 50 minutes.

Saina Nehwal, Malvika Bansod, Prannoy HS, Ashmita Chaliha, Parupalli Kashyap, and other well-known shuttlers will compete later on today. Each of them will begin their tournament campaigns.

Notably, Singapore will host The Singapore Open from July 12 to July 17.
