Nitish Kumar, the CM of Bihar, responded to the Motihari hooch disaster on Saturday by calling it a tragic situation and requesting all relevant information.
Speaking to ANI about the six individuals who allegedly consumed fake alcohol and died in Motihari, CM Nitish Kumar stated, “It is a sad incident. I have asked for all information on it.”
The Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act of 2016 was used by Nitish Kumar’s administration to impose alcohol prohibition throughout the state.
Five individuals died earlier in January as a result of drinking spurious alcohol in the Bala village in Lakari Nabiganj of the Siwan district in Bihar, stated a District Magistrate official.
According to the police, 16 people have been arrested thus far in relation to the Siwan Hooch tragedy.
The incident was discovered a few days after illegal liquor bottles that had been placed in a gutter in Danapur on December 21 of last year were discovered by the Bihar Police. The district authority began operating camps in the village when the deaths caused by fake alcohol came to light.
Over 50 people died in Bihar’s Chhapra from fake alcohol in December of last year, while at least five more allegedly passed away from drinking hooch in the neighbouring Siwan district. Family relatives of the deceased who were furious had protested by blocking the Malmalia main road between Siwan and Chapra. The deceased’s bodies were taken to Sadar Hospital in Siwan.
The deaths also sparked outrage on a national and state level, with opposition politicians criticising Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over the deaths and Kumar himself repeating “piyoge to maroge” in front of the assembly. (You will die if you drink).
